1962, it is the first Asian Games for Indonesia to become the host city. August 24, the 4 th Asian Games officially opened by President Soekarno at Gelora Bung Karno Stadium. With 1,460 athletes representing 17 Asian National Olympics Committees, featuring 13 sports branches; athletics, aquatics (swimming, diving, and water polo), basketball, boxing, cycling (road cycling and track cycling), field hockey, football, shooting, table tennis, tennis, volley ball, and wrestling. A total of 372 medals were awarded.
Energy of Asia
The 18th Asian Games Jakarta Palembang burst into spectacular life last night at the Gelora Bung Karno Stadium in Jakarta. Opening with a dramatic arrival from Indonesian President Joko Widodo, the breathtaking show, helmed by experienced IGBS director Simon Francis, featured performances from notable musical performers and a creative show taking in Indonesia’s birth, vibrant landscape and cultural diversity.
